Temporary anchorage devices — often called orthodontic mini-screws — are small titanium screws that can be placed temporarily to provide additional anchorage during treatment.
In certain cases, achieving a specific tooth movement — such as closing a space, correcting a bite, or moving teeth without unwanted side effects on neighboring teeth — requires more anchorage than braces or aligners can provide on their own.
TADs are placed in a straightforward, minimally invasive procedure under local anesthetic, used for the relevant phase of treatment, and removed once they are no longer needed. They are not required for every patient, and their use is planned only where clinically justified.
What's involved
- Additional anchorage. Provide stable anchorage for movements that would otherwise be difficult to control.
- Minimally invasive placement. Placed under local anesthetic in a brief, straightforward procedure.
- Used selectively. Recommended only where the case genuinely benefits from additional anchorage.
