Early assessment allows certain growth and developmental concerns to be identified while a child is still growing, so that treatment — when it is genuinely needed — can be timed appropriately.
Not every child who is seen for an early orthodontic assessment needs treatment right away. In many cases, the most appropriate plan is simply to monitor growth and development at regular intervals until the timing is right.
When early treatment is recommended, it is usually because addressing a specific issue — such as a crossbite, significant crowding, or a developing skeletal discrepancy — while the jaws are still growing can simplify or shorten treatment later on.
What's involved
- Early screening. Assessment of jaw growth, tooth eruption, and bite development to identify concerns early.
- Appropriately timed treatment. Treatment is recommended only when there is a clear developmental or functional reason to intervene early.
- Growth-focused planning. Where indicated, appliances are used to guide jaw development during the growth window.
- Long-term oral health. Planning that considers how early decisions affect space, alignment, and later treatment needs.
